What happens to believers who have died? Are they sleeping and unaware of what is happening on earth until a future event? Do their souls go to be with Jesus? If so, are they aware of what is taking place on earth from heaven?

Some of the answer to this question was covered on week #2 of the series. In particular the conversation about the place of the dead. (Luke 16:19-31)

For believers, death is to be “away from the body and at home with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:6-8; Philippians 1:23). Further, passages such as 1 Corinthians 15:50-54 and 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 describe believers being resurrected and given glorified bodies. If believers go to be with Christ immediately after death, what is the purpose of this resurrection? Therefore, it seems that while the spirits of believers go to be with Christ immediately after death, the physical body remains in the grave “sleeping.” At the resurrection of believers, the physical body is resurrected, glorified, and then reunited with the spirit. This reunited and glorified body-soul-spirit will be the possession of believers for eternity in the new heavens and new earth Revelation 21-22.

Beyond the question of where people go, you ask about whether they are aware of the activities of the earth after their life on earth is over. Scripture does not tell us what happens to a Christian once they enter heaven during the “Church Age”.

Hebrews suggests that there is an audience in heaven cheering on the believers on earth. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses … let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12:1). It is possible that the witnesses include those whose spirits are in heaven, but not a certainty.

Luke 15:7, 10 says that there is a celebration in heaven when a person repents and turns to the Lord. Verse 10 says that the celebration is in the presence of angels. Again it’s possible that this group is aware and doing the celebrating. It’s also possible that sinner’s decision for Christ is announced in heaven and all who are there are celebrating. In that case they would be doing something, but not necessarily have an awareness of anything unless they were told.

God has chosen the details we need to know for now, and has left other information in the “yet to be discovered” category. For example we know that our job while on the earth is to be a witness for the Lord and make disciples. We also know what the Lord is doing since He has ascended into heaven. We don’t know about the rest, just yet.
